What Is Usman Ki Baithak?

What Does Baithak Mean?

In Urdu and Punjabi, a baithak is simply a sitting room, a place where guests sit and talk. In the past, in fact, many homes in old Lahore had one. Friends met there for tea, poetry, music and long conversations.

Usman Ki Baithak Lahore: A Sitting Spot for Visitors

Usman Ki Baithak brings that idea back to life. It was set up in Gali Surjan Singh as a sitting area for tourists. In other words, it sits right on the walking route from Delhi Gate. Today, it works like a small cafe. So, you can rest, order a cup of chai and enjoy the street around you.

Also, many readers know the name from Nimra Ahmed’s Urdu novel Mala. As a result, some fans of the book visit Usman Ki Baithak in Lahore just to see it.

The Street Around Usman Ki Baithak Lahore

Usman Ki Baithak sits in Gali Surjan Singh, the main lane that opens from Delhi Gate. It is named after Hakim Surjan Singh, a 19th-century physician who lived on this street.

In 2012, the Walled City of Lahore Authority and the Aga Khan Cultural Service restored the lane. The German embassy paid for much of the work. For example, they moved the messy electricity wires underground and fixed the old drains. Then, in 2021, the street was decorated with plants and flowers.

As a result, it is now one of the prettiest lanes in old Lahore. Look out for painted doors, wooden balconies and hanging flower pots.

Chai and Food

What to Order

Of course, chai is the heart of any baithak. So, start with a cup of hot doodh patti, the strong milky tea that Lahore runs on. Then, if you are hungry, try something desi, such as a fresh paratha.

On Instagram, Usman Ki Baithak describes itself as a gathering spot for Lahori flavours and desi food. However, the menu can change. So, check their page for the latest dishes before you go.
